October Blog 2025
b
October is here! Time for harvest, darker nights and the occasional spook! What a great time for flowers and plants, so many deep shades of orange, purples and plum which sets the season off just right.
Take a look at what fun we've had over the last month.

What we've been up to
We started this month off right with a Autumn wreath workshop hosted by the wonderful Meaks of Melbourne! Ten ladies joined us to create a grapevine wreath with a fresh/dried flower spray to decorate, topped off with a big bow.
Harriet from Meaks looked after us brilliantly.

Artist of the month
Judith Brown specialises in making beautiful wire jewellery and has been doing so for over 20 years! She has developed her techniques over the years and uses her skills to loop, twist, wrap and embellish her designs with glass beads.
We have recently added her Bohemia Range of jewellery to our collection of gifts. They come in beautiful colours that shine in the autumn sun! They are a perfect little gift for any seasonal birthdays.
Flower of the month
The flowers of this month include the bright Marigold quite often planted in greenhouses to deter greenfly, and dainty Cosmos which have many medicinal purposes.
Marigold are popular because they are easy to grow, low maintenance and colourful blooms which usually appear in orange, red and yellow. In recent times they have been linked to optimism and prosperity and have been used for over 2,000 years in Day of the Dead festivities in Mexico.

Cosmos, native to Mexico, come
in varying colours like pink, red,
yellow and white. They have long symbolised harmony and balance.
Cosmos is an annual, easy to grow
and will often reseed itself.

Melbourne Festival
We hope you all had a great weekend at the Arts Festival. Over 100 artists came to the village to show off their amazing skills and creations, from painters to jewellers, potters to blacksmiths, there was something for everyone.
We were delighted to have Christine Pearson in the shop for the weekend, showcasing her beautiful enamelled copper jewellery.
The two Busk Stops show cased a weekend of musical talent which
helped create the full festival vibe.

Fun Fact!
The Physalis (Chinese lanterns) that you find in flower shops around this season are edible when ripe! There are many types of Physalis but these have a tarte sweetness.

Hope everyone has a spooky season! See you in November!

The two flowers for this month are Morning Glory and the Aster!

Morning Glory are mostly found in deep purples and blues and their trumpet shape head attracts local butterflies and bee's. Like many vine plants they have been associated with love and each colour holds a different meaning. For example pink represents gratitude and white like many other flowers represent innocence.

The Aster is a perfect flower for your garden when transitioning to the autumnal months to add a pop of colour! They also last well when cut for the house.
Aster is a symbol of wisdom, patience and beauty.

August Blog 2025
b

We will be closed those days and back open on the 2nd September with a fresh full stand of flowers and plants ready for you to handpick from! Sue, Ian and Pippy will be enjoying a week in sunny Cornwall, treating themselves to classic Cornish treats. Emily and her family will be heading to the seaside town of Whitby to get some much needed relaxation and of course fish and chips!

Artist of the month
Our featured artist this month is Big Black House who creates wonderful rusty ornaments for the garden! Maxine is a blacksmith from Yorkshire. Her work has been featured in Chelsea Flower show gardens over the last few years.
We have just received a fresh shipment of ornaments, containing new designs to suit every garden, which include butterflies, hanging bells and large extravagant flowers, all made from British steel..

What we've been up to!
August is always a busy for weddings. The last bridal bouquet we created was, pearly white consisting of manly Roses, Gypsophila, Lisianthus and Eucalyptus.
We do love a wild and wacky style of flowers but you cant go wrong with the classics!

Fun fact
The two flowers for this month are the tall Gladiolus and the famous Poppy!

The Gladiolus are a tall vibrant flower that can come in over 300 species, also known as the 'sword lily,' its name comes from the sword appearance of its leaves. The flower, symbolises strength, victory and honour. Each colour has a different meaning and traditionally they are usually given as a 40th Wedding Anniversary gift!

The Poppy became the flower of remembrance at the end of the of the first world war. Inspired by the poem "In Flanders Fields". They also remind us of summer harvest, usually growing in amongst a field of golden wheat or barley. As a cut flower, the Poppy isn't long lasting due to it's paper like petals so best enjoyed in the garden or growing wild in the fields.

Lavender Season!
We are all feeling pretty chilled in the shop at the moment, due to our new delivery of dried Lavender. The shop smells amazing, you might even be able to smell it as you walk past the shop. Every year we have fresh supply of Lavender from the Lavender fields at Castle Farm, Kent. We also have Lavender gifts from Lavender oil, bath salts and Lavender sachets.

Top Tip!
Dried flowers are very much on trend. Here are some tricks and tips to dry your own, whether they are from the garden or from a gifted flower bouquet.
Pick your flowers for drying when they are at the best (before they start to fade). Hang upside down in small bunches, (remove the majority of the foliage). Hang in a low lit, well ventilated but dry room. Flowers will take a few weeks to fully dry. Once dried they will last many years but colours will fade over time.

Thank you for tuning in this August! Enjoy the rest of your summer. See you next month,
Don't forget we will be closed between 24th August to 1st September

Wedding bells are ringing!
We were lucky enough to provide the flowers for a wedding at The River Mill in Darley Abbey. The lovely couple decided on a wild country garden feel to their flowers, which fitted our natural colourful style and the venue perfectly.

The mix of vibrant colours, wild textures and flower varieties really compliment both the venue and the weather!

What we've been up to!
We started off this month right, by going to see one of our favourite jazz artists, Laufey! She performed at Birmingham Town Hall and played an amazing set, even previewing some unheard songs!
Fun fact
The flowers for July are Larkspur and the beautiful Water Lily.
The Larkspur has long symbolised positivity, sincerity and dedication. Although each colour holds different meanings, for example the blue means dignity and white means happiness.

Water Lily, most notably the white variety, symbolises purity and innocence. Pink signifies joy and friendship.

School holidays are nearly here, with all the young folk counting down the days and parents desperately thinking of how they will entertain them.
Why not treat their hard working teachers to a little gift.

May Blog 2025
b
Hope everyone enjoyed their Easter weekend off! Here we are in May, the month filled with Paeonies, Maypole festivals and warmer days. Learn about May traditions and how to care for your flowers in this months Bloomin Blog!

Flowers
Tulip season is sadly coming to an end but Peony season has begun.
May is a wonderful time for flowers, country garden varieties are available such as Stocks, Allium, Delphinium and Phlox.
Gardens are greening up and Herbaceous borders are flourishing.

Top tip!
If you were lucky enough to receive some flowers or have just been picking a few from the garden. The best way to care for them, is to recut the stems at a angle, place them in clean fresh water, in a clean vase. Removing any foliage which is damaged or below the waterline. Every couple days replace the water and recut the stems, to get the best time out of your flowers.

Did you know?
Originally the Maypole was a tree and overtime it became the pole we know today. Some say that the tree represented masculine energy and the ribbons represented feminine energy. Reminds people that Spring has sprung and rebirth has begun.

What we've been up to!
Over the Easter weekend Sue and Ian had a trip to Amsterdam!
They went on a scenic boat
trip, went around the Tulip
museum and toured the city

Fun fact
Back in the 1600s, the 'Semper Augustus' tulip became priceless due to it's petal discolouration (caused by a virus). To own the bulbs was a sign of wealth and 3 bulbs were worth as much as a house on the canal front.

Birth Flowers of May
Lily of the Valley is often associated with sweetness, humility, and the return of happiness. It is also a popular choice for wedding bouquets.
Hawthorn symbolizes love, hope, and protection, and is sometimes used in May Day celebrations.
Thank you for tuning in this May!
See you next month!

Easter is late this year so Spring is in full swing! We have lovely array of garden plants perfect for planting outside in beds and tubs.

Did you know?
Traditionally, at Easter, people would give each other chicken's eggs which had been hard boiled and painted bright colours (that's where the tradition of decorating eggs comes from.)
It was in Easter 1873, that Fry's would create the first chocolate egg.
Fun fact!
It is estimated that between 80-90 million chocolate eggs were eaten over 2024.
The two most popular variety of lilies for Easter are Longiflorum or Arum lily (Zantedeschia.)

Gifts

Events -
Tea, talk and Tulips!
This year we are doing something new by introducing a special Mothers Day afternoon event! We will be hosting this event on Sunday 13th April, a perfect gift for your Mum. It will include making a handtied bouquet and floral arrangement, tea, coffee or a glass of Prosecco, all accompanied by a delicious cake box provided by Melbourne Deli!
See our 'Events' page for more details!

Mimosa is the traditional symbol of International Women's Day! In 1946, Italian feminists chose the mimosa to represent strength, sensibility and sensitivity. The bright yellow blooms symbolise the brightness that women bring to society!

A snippet of a poem to celebrate International Women's Day, Sunday 8th March, written by Dan Whitlam

'Dear Women of our lifetime,
you women are our lifeline.
The ones who bring us into the world,
teach us kindness from a bright mind.
The ones who despite it all,
are still planting seeds in this ugly world,
turning fields of greed into fields of green,
and hate into lovely words.'
Top Tip!
Daffodils and Narcissus sap can be poisonous to other flowers.
Either place them in their own vase or let them have a good drink on their own and after the sap has stopped dripping they then be placed with other flowers,
but do not recut!
Gifts
Keeping with the Spring theme we have lots of seed goodies that you can grow straight from your window ledge. We have flowering plants from pansies to marigolds, herbs from basil to chive and hot chili plants!

If your mum is fan of jewellery we have a nice range of various local designers stocked in the shop. If she's a colourful person then some Sweet Tilda earrings will suit her bright personality. If her tastes are more simple then Lucy Kemps silver jewellery will be her cup of tea!
Hope you enjoy the month of March! Embrace the sounds of Spring, birds tweeting, lambs bleating and the new bursts of life!
See you next month!

Poem-
- O, my Luve's like a red, red rose,
that's newly sprung in June.
O, my Luve's like a melodie,
That's sweetly play'd in tune.
- As fair as thou, my bonnie lass,
so deep in love am I.
And I will love thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry.
- Robert Burns

Flowers -
This is the month of love for all the couples out there! Not long now till the 14th so if you haven't placed your order for flowers, don't hesitate. We will have many different flowers for you to choose from, you can stay traditional with 'Red Naomi' roses or why not go wild with some colourful Spring tulips? We handcraft each bouquet especially for each customer so whatever your partners cup of tea; we can make it for you!

Top tip for Roses:

Events -
We have been chosen to join Amalfi White at their Spring Wedding Fair on February 9th. It is a free event so if your getting married this year, or in the future, feel free to pop down and have a chat with us.
Check out their website!

When you receive your roses, cut the stems at an angle, drop in deep fresh water and place somewhere cool.
If for any reason your roses seem to be drooping at the neck, fill up a bowl of warm water and cut your rose stems at an angle under the water. Then leave to revive for a good
hour, once they have recovered, pop them back in your lovely
clean vase.

As a lovely keepsake,
Why not try hanging your roses up to dry, in a warm dry place. This process will take around 4 weeks. Once dried display in a vase but keep out of the sun.
Thank you for tuning into this months blog, we hope you have a month filled with love! See you next month! f

-
Keep your Tulips wrapped in paper, then chop a small amount off the stems and place them in a vase of clean water, Allow them to drink before removing the paper. Trim the stem every couple of days to keep them under control or let them go wild!

Plants
Now that the decorations have come down its time to green up your space with some bulbs and flowering plants to add a bit of early spring. Such as lovely scented hyacinths, cheery tete a tetes and watch Muscari grow into cute pixie hats.
Enjoy them in your home and
then plant them outside
for next year.
When you cant get out in the garden because of the chilly weather, why not get creative and put a few plants together to create an indoor planter that will look lovely sitting on a window ledge or an inside table. Take that fruit bowl or old teapot that is gathering dust and pop some colourful bulbs and moss in to jazz it up. Watch them grow over the weeks and enjoy your indoor garden!
We have baskets, tin troughs and ceramic bowls to plant or why not consider bringing your own container for us to make a more personalized planter for you!
